A heat pump can be technologically efficient, but the final result also depends on how it is managed together with the other system components. Heating and cooling generation, photovoltaic production, radiant heating and cooling, domestic hot water and indoor conditions must continuously adapt to the building’s needs and to the availability of energy.

Febos X is the EMMETI system controller designed to coordinate these functions in systems based on Mirai SMI Leaf and Mirai SMI 4.0 heat pumps. The system manages indoor temperature and humidity, monitors energy consumption, controls heat pump modulation and, when a photovoltaic system is installed, uses energy data to make the most of locally generated power.

What is Febos X?

Febos X is the advanced user interface and system controller that allows users to view and set the operating parameters of the heat pump and the entire system.

Unlike a simple thermostat, which detects the room temperature and switches the system on or off, Febos X takes multiple variables into account and coordinates several functions: heat pump modulation, domestic hot water production, radiant heating and cooling and, when a photovoltaic system is installed, the use of locally generated energy.

For this reason, in functional terms, it can be described as the system orchestrator: it does not replace the individual components, but coordinates their operation and provides an overall view of the system.

It is available with a 5- or 7-inch touchscreen display and can be configured as a Master or Slave device in systems serving multiple rooms or zones.


How does Febos X coordinate the heat pump throughout the day?

Febos X coordinates heat pump operation according to outdoor conditions, the needs of the indoor spaces and the building’s thermal characteristics.

During the early hours of the day, the system gradually starts the heat pump, increasing its output when weather and energy conditions become more favourable.

It subsequently reduces modulation and can bring forward shutdown when the energy stored in the building is sufficient to maintain the required level of comfort.

This management strategy is particularly effective with underfloor radiant systems, where the screed and the building structure store heat and release it gradually over time. Febos X uses this thermal inertia as a heat buffer, limiting frequent heat pump start-stop cycles.

In this way, the system helps maintain a more stable indoor temperature, reduce ON/OFF cycles and promote more efficient system operation throughout the day.


How does Febos X use the energy generated by the photovoltaic system?

Febos X uses information on photovoltaic production and household consumption to adapt heat pump operation to the availability of locally generated energy.

This function is enabled through Febos-Energy, the device installed in the electrical panel that measures the energy exchanged between the home and the grid, as well as the energy generated by the photovoltaic system. The data is transmitted to Febos X via an RS485 connection.

When the photovoltaic system is generating energy, the controller can favour heat pump operation during the most advantageous periods. The available energy can be used to maintain indoor comfort or to bring forward domestic hot water production, reducing the need to draw electricity from the grid at less favourable times.

The system therefore does more than simply display production and consumption data. Febos X introduces a photovoltaic production tracking logic: the system adjusts its operation according to the energy actually available, while always prioritising the selected comfort settings.


How does Febos X manage temperature, humidity and radiant cooling?

Febos X coordinates temperature and humidity management, two closely related parameters, particularly in radiant cooling systems.

The terminal incorporates sensors that detect temperature, relative humidity and air quality through VOC monitoring. It can also receive information from window contacts and presence sensors, and manage heating, cooling and dehumidification requests. This allows system operation to adapt to the actual conditions in each room.

Humidity control is particularly important with underfloor cooling. Febos X monitors temperature and humidity conditions and coordinates the system to reduce the risk of surfaces reaching the dew point and causing condensation.

Supervision also extends to domestic hot water production. The system makes it possible to schedule the main periods of use and coordinate production with energy availability. Heating, cooling, dehumidification and DHW are therefore managed as parts of a single system rather than as separate functions.


What components make up the Febos X system?

Febos X consists of more than just the touchscreen terminal. The system configuration varies according to the heat pump model, the type of electrical supply and the energy management functions required by the installation.
Depending on the configuration, the system may include:
  • the Febos X terminal with a 5- or 7-inch touchscreen display;
  • the Febos-Energy module, installed in the electrical panel;
  • single-phase or three-phase energy meters;
  • the domestic hot water temperature sensor;
  • the Vortex flow meter required for Mirai SMI 4.0;
  • the RS485 Modbus connection;
  • any additional terminals configured as Slave devices.

Dedicated single-zone kits are available for the Mirai SMI Leaf and Mirai SMI 4.0 heat pumps, with configurations for single-phase and three-phase systems. Component selection must be defined during the design stage according to the system characteristics and the building’s requirements.

Febos X is also classified as a Class V control device under EU Delegated Regulation No 811/2013, providing a 4% contribution to the seasonal energy efficiency of space heating.


How can the system be controlled remotely with the Febos X App?

The Febos X App provides smartphone access to the main functions of the system installed in the home, even when the user is away.

How is the Febos X App connected to the system?

To begin, the Febos X terminals must be connected to the Wi-Fi network and the system paired using a QR code. Once configuration is complete, users can view the different rooms and zones, control the heat pump and domestic hot water production, consult Febos-Energy data and monitor statistics, notifications and alarm history.

The App also makes it possible to change setpoints and check the system’s main operating parameters. It therefore offers more than remote switching on and off: it provides an overall view of the system and helps users understand how comfort and energy consumption change throughout the day.

Available functions, access levels and any subscription-based services depend on the terms in effect at the time of activation.


What are the differences between FEBOS Basic, FEBOS 4.0 and Febos X?

FEBOS is the result of a continuous development process designed to provide increasingly coordinated management of the heat pump and the other system components. The different Febos versions are therefore not equivalent products with different names, but successive stages in the system’s evolution.

In the previous generation, FEBOS-CRONO was available in Basic and Wi-Fi versions. The Basic version made it possible to control room temperature and humidity locally, set heat pump parameters and operate the terminal as a Master or Slave device. The Wi-Fi version added cloud connectivity and remote control. When integrated into the FEBOS 4.0 architecture, the terminal could also communicate with devices that measured consumption and photovoltaic production, coordinating comfort, domestic hot water and the use of self-generated energy.

Febos X takes this approach a step further. The new controller introduces 5- or 7-inch touchscreen displays, integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, remote firmware updates, an additional VOC monitoring sensor and a new dedicated App.

It is also designed to operate with both Mirai SMI 4.0 and the new Mirai SMI Leaf, while retaining control of the heat pump, indoor temperature and humidity, domestic hot water production and photovoltaic self-consumption.


Selected EMMETI projects featuring FEBOS

In recent EMMETI projects, FEBOS acts as the controller of the integrated system: it coordinates the heat pump, the radiant system, domestic hot water production, temperature and humidity control and, where present, the energy generated by the photovoltaic system.

Its value lies precisely in this coordinating role. FEBOS enables the different components to operate together, adapting system operation to the building’s conditions, comfort requirements and energy availability.

The Caltana, Gualdo Tadino and Fano case studies show how this approach has been applied in different contexts, from energy renovation projects to new buildings, with a common objective: combining multiple technologies into a single system capable of operating consistently and efficiently.


From five class G shops to seven class A4 nZEB apartments

In the Caltana di Santa Maria di Sala renovation project, a 350 m² commercial property was converted into seven self-contained apartments.
Each unit was equipped with a heat pump, radiant system, dehumidification, domestic hot water production and FEBOS Basic for system management. The project transformed a class G property into seven class A4 nZEB units, with indicative annual energy values ranging from 5 to 20 kWh/m².


A new low-energy home in Gualdo Tadino

In the low-energy home in Gualdo Tadino, FEBOS coordinates a solution comprising a heat pump, radiant system, photovoltaic system and solar thermal system. The home achieved energy class A3, with an EPgl,nren of 22.880 kWh/m² per year.

The control system also uses outdoor conditions to manage system operation in line with the building’s energy requirements.


From a class G house to a class A3 home in Fano

In the energy renovation project carried out in Fano, FEBOS is integrated into a system comprising a heat pump, radiant system and 6 kWp photovoltaic system. Overall energy demand fell from 288.65 to 37.62 kWh/m² per year, a reduction of approximately 87%. In this case, the management system helps coordinate system operation and the use of photovoltaic energy.

A further case study documenting a renovation from class G to class A4 features the previous-generation FEBOS 4.0 together with Mirai SMI and a 6 kWp photovoltaic system. This project helps explain the historical development of EMMETI’s system control approach.
